Satellite Beach.....Are You Ready for the Challenge???? 

The 2017 Health First Mayors' Fitness Challenge is on and we are excited about the FREE classes and events that are being offered.  January 20th is the last day to sign up to participate: http://www.brevardmayorfitnesschallenge.com

The Mayors' Fitness Challenge starts on February 4th and runs through May 5th, 2017.

City Field Day at Satellite Beach Sportspark on February 4th from 2-6 pm. This event for the whole family will include activities by the local football, lacrosse, and soccer leagues. The afternoon will conclude with a Police vs Firefighter Dodgeball game, which kids will be invited to play in as well! Food trucks will be on site to keep participants fueled.

3 H Fitness Class is offered at the David R. Schechter Community Center at 8:45 am and 9:45 am for free once a month during the challenge (February 6th, March 6th, and April 3rd). Carrie covers all the elements that keep you strong, energetic, and flexible. This class uses chairs and weights to keep you off of the floor!

Long Doggers Run for Brews begins at 7:00 pm every Tuesday at the Satellite Beach location. Participants will complete a 5k and then enjoy some social time at Long Doggers after. Tuesdays are t-shirt night as well, wear a shirt from Long Doggers and get 10% off of your bill. 

Zumba Gold/Active Senior Dance Fitness with Rochelle will be offered every Tuesday at 6:45 pm at the David R. Schechter Community Center.  We're high energy, low impact! **Class is cancelled on Feb. 14th**

Blitz Class with Erika is a 1 hour self-paced mix of High Intensity Interval Training using light to moderately heavy weights, plyometrics, and functional body weight movements organized in a Group Circuit for all levels of fitness! This class will be held on Wednesdays at South Beach Fitness on A1A at 5:30 pm for the month of February only. First time attendees will need to fill out a waiver at the front desk, please arrive 10-15 minutes early to do so. Child care is available, please see front desk about rates for this service.

Indian River Cross Fit has offered free classes at 902 Pine Tree Drive in Indian Harbour Beach every Thursday at 6:30 pm. No matter what condition you are in, CrossFit training is most likely different from anything you have ever done. It focuses on technique, strength, and intensity. Every workout is scalable for the individual’s needs and goals.

Zumba For Adults is an adults only class featuring dance-fitness that is effective, fun and a great workout! Meeting at the Satellite Beach Civic Center at 6:00 pm on February 8th and 22nd.

Nutrition Classes
Class #1 (February 9th) - Preparing your body for a meal, EBT Therapy and how you can prepare to absorb, digest and utilize your foods.

Class #2 (March 9th) - Prepping and shopping for healthy well balanced meals with nutrient content. Examples and actual cooking instruction.

Class #3 (March 30th) - Supplementing your diet, what is missing from most foods, improving digestion. Mild exercise and movement instruction. These classes will be held at the David R. Schechter Community Center at 6:00 pm in the concession area.

Yappy Hour Dog Walk is a dog-friendly walk around the Satellite Beach Dog Park. A great social event for you and your pooch! Walkers will meet at the dog park at 5:00 pm every Friday during the challenge. Click here to read the flyer with more information.

Mayor’s Walk at the Satellite Beach City Hall on February 11th at 9:00 am. Get to know your Mayor and take a nice stroll around the City.

Brevard Zoo Komodo Krawl takes place at the Brevard Zoo on February 11th starting at 7 am for participants who can finish in under 20 minutes. Those who will need more time can plan to begin at 7:35am. Registration and more information for this race is online at https://secure.runningzone.com/brevardzoo/ . **This event costs $30/adult and $15/child.

Hatha Yoga is a gentle form of yoga combining physical well-being that balances the body, mind and spirit using guided yoga poses, stretching, and deep breathing. Held at the Pelican Beach Clubhouse at 6:30 pm on February 13th, March 13th, and April 10th.

Florida Today Walk with Bob Gabordi, Executive Editor. Join Bob and Mayor Catino for a sunrise walk from the Pelican Beach Clubhouse to Hightower Beach. Meet at 6:30 am at Pelican Beach Clubhouse on February 18th.

Cornhole Tournament at Pelican Beach Park- This event will be held on February 19th and will benefit the City Relay for Life team.  It is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and play this exciting game! There is a $20 cost to play, half of the money will benefit Relay, and the other half will go to the winners! It’s a blind draw to get your partner and a giant basket raffle too!

Samsons Island Open House invites participants to explore the island’s trails in hopes of seeing wildlife and stay for a picnic lunch. Demonstrations of fishing, oyster mat making and bird watching will be going on all day. Plus an opportunity to paddle board for free! You must RSVP to 321-773-6458 to attend!  This event is on February 25th from 9:30 am – 2 pm.

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong and racquetball. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S.  All levels of abilities are welcome.  Join us at the David R. Schechter Community Center at pm on February 27th, March 27th, and April 24th.

Family Zumba with Shannon at the Satellite Beach Civic Center at 6:00 pm. Every Wednesday in March.  Zumba is a dance-fitness class that makes working out fun! These classes are family friendly!

Move Your Mutt 2 Miler-Join other dog lovers to run, walk or wag your tail 2 miles through the surrounding beachside neighborhood. This event begins and ends at the Satellite Beach Dog Park. It's the paw-fect way to start your day! Start time 7:30 am, price is $25.00 + $2.50 sign up fee. Registration ends March 1.

Yoga with Mindy- Councilwoman Gibson will hold a yoga class in Council Chambers at 565 Cassia Blvd at 10 am on March 4th. Come meet her and some neighbors while getting a good workout!

Beach Clean-up at Pelican Beach Park- This monthly clean-up is organized by Ethan and Kathy Shoda, residents of Satellite Beach, and Keep Brevard Beautiful provides supplies. Please bring your own water and meet everyone at 8 am to join in the fun!  Next dates include March 11th and April 8th.

Fire Truck Pull will be held at the David R. Schechter Community Center parking lot from 7 am-7 pm on March 11th. Fire Truck Pull is a physical endurance course that includes pulling a Fire Truck and other physically challenging activities. This event is a fundraiser for Relay for Life and the Fire Department and Indian River Crossfit coordinate the activities.

Relay for Life is an overnight community event where teams participate in a relay-style walk or run to raise funds for American Cancer Society. The event brings the whole community together for a night of fun, entertainment, celebration and remembrance. Join the fun and get some laps in too! It will begin at 5:00 pm on March 24th at Satellite High School.

Paddling Paradise- located at 729 N Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne is offering discounted rates for Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP). On Saturday, March 25th and Saturday, April 29th from 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. Paddling Paradise will charge $15 per hour for participants. This is a great oppertunity to try this popular water sport.

Kickboxing with Shannon at the Satellite Beach Civic Center at 6:00 pm every Wednesday in April. Kickboxing is a  group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, practiced for self-defense, general fitness, or as a contact sport.

Keep Brevard Beautiful Annual Trash Bash is coming up on April 1st from 8 am-noon. Several team captains will be collecting trash in the City to organize the most volunteers and remove the most trash from their area. Sites for collecting will be: Pelican Beach Park, Grant Avenue Beach access, and Shell Street. Top cities for volunteer numbers and trash collection also have a shot at winning $500 donated to the non-profit of their choice; let’s make sure the county knows how much Satellite Beach loves to win!!

Pirate Plunder 2 Miler on April 8th at 6:30 pm at Meg O’Malley’s in downtown Melbourne. This is a fun pirate-themed 2 mile run/walk. Best pirate costume awards and post-race party at Meg’s. To Write Love on Her Arms “Run for It” 5k -This Annual 5k is an invitation to move for something that matters and to challenge the stigma of mental health issues in our community. The race starts at the David R. Schechter Community Center at 8 am on April 15th. Mindy’s Couch to 5k-Do you want help to become a 5k runner? Receive advice on technique and practice with other beginner runners to help you achieve your goals. The practice for this 5k will be every Tuesday at the Long Doggers Run for Brews. Meet at 6:45 pm to get acquainted with Mindy and meet your fellow participants.  Mindy’s Couch to 5k event will be on April 22nd starting at 7:30am at the David R. Schechter Community Center.

Cook with Me-Parent and child nutritional cooking class will be April 29, 10am-12pm at the DRS Concession Room. This class includes nutrition education and hands-on preparation of healthy and delicious foods and snacks.
